Van Dyck ha trascorso la maggior parte dei suoi anni italiani a Genova, un fiorente porto mediterraneo con un'importante comunità fiamminga. Sulla scia di Pietro Paul Rubens, che lo aveva preceduto nel primo decennio del secolo, fornì alle famiglie nobili della città con grandi ritratti, molti dei quali ancora adornano i loro palazzi. Questo ritratto di una giovane donna lussuosamente vestita in piedi contro uno sfondo architettonico liberamente definito è un esempio tipico. Anche se rimane non identificata, il sacco attraverso il suo torso e i bordi neri delle sue manette sembrano indicare che è una vedova.
