Anne Carey, später Gräfin von Clanbrassil, war die Tochter von Henry Carey, zweiter Graf von Monmouth, und Martha Cranfield. Nach einer Familiengeschichte war die Gräfin von Clanbrassil eine „sehr schöne und witzige“ Frau, die „außerordentlich in Wissen, Tugend und Frömmigkeit“ war. Dieses Porträt wurde wahrscheinlich anlässlich ihres Engagements an James Hamilton gemalt, Erbe einer schottischen Familie, die große Landzuschüsse in Nordirland erhalten hatte. Frau Anne blickt nach links in einer Arcadian-Landschaft, mit dem Boulder hinter ihrem Waldrand. Van Dyck hat diese Kulisse in anderen Porträts wiederverwendet und den Geschmack von englischen Aristokraten verpflegung, die in pastoralen Fantasien Zuflucht suchten.
