All'inizio degli anni 1820, i critici parigini furono molto pressati per decidere quale giovane pittore tenne una promessa maggiore, Vernet o il suo amico intimo, e rivale amichevole—Gericault. Questo lavoro mostra Gericault come artista romantico, un tipo che recentemente era venuto ad essere basato sull'esempio di Lord Byron. È raffigurato in profondità nel pensiero e possibilmente soffrendo fisicamente pure. Fu probabilmente dipinto quando Gericault fu colpito dalla malattia che rivendicava la sua vita nel 1824. In un litografia realizzata da Vernet nel 1823, Gericault indossa la stessa sciarpa sulla testa.
