Il celebre scultore danese Bertel Thorvaldsen trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita lavorativa a Roma. Fu amico di Vernet durante il secondo mandato di direttore dell'Accademia francese di Roma, tra il 1829 e il 1835. Il busto di marmo rappresentato qui è stato dato da Vernet nel 1835 al Musée Calvet, Avignone; lo stampo originale in gesso è nel Museo Thorvaldsens, Copenaghen. Il presente lavoro è una replica della prima versione del Museo Thorvaldsens, in cui lo stand a destra è firmato e datato 1833.
