Anton Mauve è cresciuto a Haarlem, ma dal 1882 al 1885 trascorse tre estati successive a Laren, dove successivamente fece la sua casa. Fu colpito dal paesaggio intorno a Laren e le sue lettere a sua moglie contengono testimonianze entusiastiche dei suoi ramble nella zona. Le pecore erano presenti nei dipinti di Mauve anche prima di andare a vivere a Laren, ma dopo il 1885 diventano un motivo chiave, sostituendo gradualmente le sue mucche precedenti. Da quel momento in poi, ha avuto l'opportunità di osservare le pecore in diversi periodi dell'anno e in diversi contesti (ad esempio, sulla guarnizione o intorno ai fienili dove sono stati tenuti in inverno). Mauve dipinse Flock di pecore con pastore nella neve poco prima della sua morte. La caratteristica più sorprendente del dipinto è la spazzolatura rapida con cui ha catturato il paesaggio innevato e il gregge di pecore. Senza prestare molta attenzione ai dettagli o concentrandosi sulle singole pecore, Mauve crea un'evocazione di successo di un gregge che attinge attraverso la neve profonda. Fonte: S. de Bodt, M.
