Nato in Boemia, oggi Repubblica Ceca, Mengs divenne una celebrità internazionale, pittura a Dresda, Roma e Madrid nel terzo trimestre del XVIII secolo. Era un rivale di Pompeo Batoni, il cui lavoro è vicino, e un amico intimo di Johann Joachim Winckelmann, che ha dipinto nel ritratto anche al Met. Le raffigurazioni di mengs di sitter di spicco sono notevoli per la loro delicatezza, ma le sue immagini di se stesso sono incomprensibili e dirette. Dipinse questo autoritratto, una delle tre versioni conosciute, a Madrid nel 1776, per cui la sua salute aveva cominciato a fallire. Un sintomo della sua malattia è visto nel gonfiore scolorito sulla fronte.
