Nacido en Bohemia, hoy República Checa, Mengs se convirtió en una celebridad internacional, pintura en Dresden, Roma y Madrid en el tercer trimestre del siglo XVIII. Era un rival de Pompeo Batoni, cuyo trabajo cuelga cerca, y un amigo cercano de Johann Joachim Winckelmann, a quien pintó en el retrato también en el Met. Las representaciones de los sitters prominentes de Mengs son notables por su delicadeza, pero sus imágenes de sí mismo no son convincentes y directas. Pintó este autorretrato, una de las tres versiones conocidas, en Madrid en 1776, por las cuales su salud había comenzado a fracasar. Un síntoma de su enfermedad se ve en la hinchazón decolorada en la frente.
