Questo dipinto è di Anton Raphael Mengs, un pittore tedesco che ha lavorato nelle principali capitali d'Europa e che è considerato uno dei più grandi esponenti del neoclassicismo. Ritrae Pietro Leopoldo, chiamato “il saggio”, figlio dell’imperatrice Maria Teresa d’Austria e fratello dell’imperatore Giuseppe II, quando era granduca di Toscana, prima di diventare imperatore come Leopoldo II. Un sovrano leader dell'Illuminismo settecentesco, viene mostrato qui in una posa dignitosa ma non ardua. Sul petto vediamo un sacco di bianco e rosso, i colori araldici degli Asburgo.
