Élève de Giovanni Paolo Panini à Rome, Joli était principalement un peintre de théâtre à Dresde, Madrid, Londres, Naples et surtout Venise, où il a été influencé par Canaletto. De 1744 à 1748, il travaille à Londres au King's Theatre, Haymarket. Il a également produit des peintures topographiques populaires parmi les collectionneurs anglais. Cette œuvre combine ces deux modes : l'avant-plan imaginaire fonctionne comme une scène inspirée de l'antiquité, tandis que l'arrière-plan est une vue contemporaine de la Tamise avec la cathédrale Saint Paul, la tour de Londres et le pont du Vieux-London.
