Als Schüler von Giovanni Paolo Panini in Rom war Joli vor allem als Maler von Theater-Sets in Dresden, Madrid, London, Neapel und vor allem Venedig tätig, wo er von Canaletto beeinflusst wurde. Von 1744 bis 1748 arbeitete er in London am King’s Theatre, Haymarket. Er produzierte auch topographische Gemälde, die unter englischen Sammlern beliebt sind. Dieses Werk kombiniert diese beiden Modi: Der imaginäre Vordergrund arbeitet wie eine Bühne, die von der Antike inspiriert ist, während der Hintergrund ein zeitgenössischer Blick auf den Fluss Thames mit der Kathedrale von Saint Paul, dem Tower of London und der Old London Bridge ist.
