Un alumno de Giovanni Paolo Panini en Roma, Joli estuvo activo principalmente como pintor de teatros en Dresden, Madrid, Londres, Nápoles, y especialmente Venecia, donde fue influenciado por Canaletto. De 1744 a 1748 trabajó en Londres en el King’s Theatre, Haymarket. También produjo pinturas topográficas populares entre los coleccionistas ingleses. Este trabajo combina estos dos modos: el primer plano imaginario opera como un escenario inspirado en la antigüedad, mientras que el fondo es una vista contemporánea del río Támesis con la Catedral de San Pablo, la Torre de Londres y el Puente Viejo de Londres.
