Anche se all'inizio l'artista era un po' riluttante a dipingere ritratti, in seguito è riuscito ad acquisire una solida reputazione attraverso di essa, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il ritratto dei bambini, di grande successo al momento, coincidente con una valutazione dell'infanzia e con l'aspetto della famiglia e degli elementi affettivi. Questo ritratto è un esempio. Appare con i suoi figli, Carlos María e Vicente. Fatto nel 1843, fu presentato alla mostra del Liceo di Madrid nel 1844, intitolata: Il Pittore con i suoi due figli, formando un paio con un altro, intitolato la moglie di Esquivel con sua figlia.
