Carlo Moretti (1828-1898), nato a Milano, ha lavorato per molti anni come insegnante di canto e pianoforte negli Stati Uniti, New York e San Francisco. Tornò in Italia nel 1885, ambientato a Monza. Nella sua volontà nomina l'Ospedale Maggiore come erede universale, con l'obbligo di un reddito usufruttuario a favore del fratello e della sorella. La commissione del ritratto è affidata ad Antonio Pasinetti, che preferisce una dettagliata rappresentazione fisionomica del benefattore ad una dettagliata rappresentazione ambientale.
