Im 17. Jahrhundert war Stillleben ein neues, aber schillernd erfolgreiches Bildgenre. Ein Großteil seiner Allure liegt in der Virtuosität; die Darstellung von natürlichen Objekten so geschickt, dass der lackierte Gegenstand für das Modell irren könnte. Dieses Gemälde, das in Portugal als Teil der persönlichen Sammlungen von Queen Carlota Joaquina ankam, offenbart die Virtuosität des Malers, sowohl in der szenographischen Anordnung der Objekte in aufeinanderfolgenden Diagonalen und der naturalistischen Behandlung, die er den Texturen und den Auswirkungen des Lichts verleiht.
