Geboren in der Sklaverei in Santo Domingo, Haiti, Pierre Toussaint wurde ungefähr 1797 von Jean Bérard, einem wohlhabenden französischen Landbesitzer nach New York gebracht. Als Bérard nach Haiti zurückkehrte und plötzlich starb und seine junge Witwe ohne Mittel in New York ließ, kümmerte sich Toussaint bis zu ihrem Tod um sie. Er unterstützte sie sowie seine eigene Familie, indem er zu einem der erfolgreichsten und modischen Friseuren in New York City wurde.
