Родился в рабстве в Санто-Доминго, Гаити, Пьер Туссайнн был доставлен в Нью-Йорк около 1797 года Жаном Бéрардом, богатым французским землевладельцем. Когда Bérard вернулся на Гаити и внезапно умер, оставив свою молодую вдову в Нью-Йорке без средств, Туссайн заботился о ней до ее смерти.
