Né en esclavage à Saint-Domingue, en Haïti, Pierre Toussaint fut amené à New York vers 1797 par Jean Bérard, riche propriétaire foncier français. Quand Bérard revint en Haïti et mourut soudainement, laissant sans moyens sa jeune veuve à New York, Toussaint prit soin d'elle jusqu'à sa mort. Il l'a soutenue ainsi que sa propre famille en devenant l'un des coiffeurs les plus réussis et les plus à la mode à New York.
