Secondo il biografo Giorgio Vasari, Sellaio era allievo di Filippo Lippi, e diverse caratteristiche dell'attuale pittura, come i raggi che circondano il Cristo Bambino, sono anche comuni ai dipinti di Lippi dello stesso soggetto. Le palpebre dell'albero nel paesaggio sono un riferimento a Matteo 3:10 ("E ora anche l'ascia è posta alla radice degli alberi: perciò ogni albero che non porta il buon frutto è gettato giù e gettato nel fuoco"). Il dipinto risale alla fine del 1480.
