Nach Angaben des Biographen Giorgio Vasari, Sellaio war ein Schüler von Filippo Lippi, und mehrere Merkmale der gegenwärtigen Malerei, wie die Strahlen um das Christuskind, sind auch gemeinsam Lippis Gemälde des gleichen Themas. Der Baum stößt in der Landschaft ist ein Hinweis auf Matthäus 3:10 ("Und nun wird auch die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; daher wird jeder Baum, der keine gute Frucht hervorbringt, niedergeschlagen und ins Feuer geworfen." Das Gemälde stammt aus den späten 1480er Jahren.
