La sua fonte è un passaggio in The Metamorphoses dall'autore romano classico Ovid (5:250-268) in cui Minerva (Greek: Pallas Athena), dea della saggezza e patrona delle arti, visita le nove Muse sul Monte Helicon per vedere una sorgente sacra chiamata Ippocrene. Minerva si trova a sinistra. Seduto proprio a destra del centro con un grande orb nel suo giro, Urania, astronomia Museof, gesti alla primavera, appena visibile nella parte superiore destra. A sinistra di Urania c'è Clio (storia); a destra di Urania si trova Polyhymnia (poesia colera). Nelle ombre di fondo sono Thalia (comedy) e Melpomene (tragedia). Erato (poesia lirica) è di fronte a loro. Calliope (poesia epica) e Euterpe (musica; tenendo un flauto) siedono a destra, e Terpsichore (danza) siede con la sua schiena a noi. A giudicare dalla luce splendente e dalla misteriosa oscurità del bosco dietro le ninfe, il giorno si sta avvicinando alla sua fine. Il tema è stato ripreso da numerosi pittori nordeuropei tra cui Frans Floris, Bartholomeus Spranger, Joachim Wtewael, Hendrick de Clerck, David Teniers the Elder, Gerard de Lairesse, Jacob de Wit, Johann Konig e Hans Rottenhammer.
