Dal 1874 Böcklin visse a Firenze. Lì incontrò Hans von Marées, con il quale viaggiò nell'Italia meridionale nel 1879. Nello stesso anno Böcklin dipinse Spring Evening, una composizione di atmosfera elegiaca. In una versione leggermente precedente, che era più vicina ai dettagli alla versione di Budapest, ma da allora è scomparsa, Pan suona un flauto trasversale. In un altro quadro, un po' più statico, dipinto un anno dopo e ora nel Kunsthaus, Zurigo, la compsizione è invertita. Nel 1890 Böcklin rivive l'idea della scena con Pan che gioca alle ninfe del bosco in tre versioni, che sono simili l'una all'altra ma significativamente diverse da quelle precedenti. Tasso di tempo
