Prima di diventare pittore, Durand fu considerato il più grande incisore negli Stati Uniti. Il suo solito procedimento era quello di iniziare facendo una copia in oli del lavoro da incidere che era uguale in dimensione alla stampa prevista. "Ariadne" è una tale copia, fatta dopo un grande dipinto di storia di John Vanderlyn (Accademia di Belle Arti di Filadelfia). Arianna era una principessa cretese brevemente amata da Theseus. L'ha abbandonata, tuttavia, sull'isola di Naxos, e lei è mostrata qui nella sua desolazione. La copia di Durand ha modificato il Neoclassicismo croccante di Vanderlyn, infondendolo con una morbidezza romantica e compensando i gusti del prudish americano rendendo la drappeggio opaco.
