Questo lavoro, caratterizzato da alberi di faggio e basso meticolosamente resi, è stato dipinto per il collezionista di New York Abraham M. Cozzens, allora membro del comitato esecutivo dell'American Art-Union. Il dipinto illustra una nuova tendenza nel lavoro della Hudson River School, con la sua diminuita enfasi sul dramma sublime e l'aumentato interesse nel naturalismo e nella creazione di un umore tranquillo. Durand fu influenzato dal lavoro del pittore paesaggista inglese John Constable, i cui formati verticali e verità alla natura assorbirono durante la visita in Inghilterra nel 1840. "The Beeches" assomiglia a Constable "The Cornfield" (National Gallery, Londra). Questo lavoro è anche il primo Durand basato su uno schizzo di olio di plein-air, una tecnica che l'artista sempre più si affidava a riprodurre con precisione le condizioni di luce e ombra.
