Auguste Vacquerie era un giornalista francese e uomo di lettere. Fu sin dai suoi primi giorni un ammiratore di Victor Hugo, con il quale fu legato dal matrimonio di suo fratello Carlo con Leopoldine Hugo [figlia di Victor Hugo]. I fratelli Vacqerie provenivano da un'importante attività di spedizione. Fu uno dei principali collaboratori dell'Événement e seguì Hugo nel suo esilio nel Jersey. Nel 1869 tornò a Parigi, e con Paul Meurice e altri fondò la rivista anti-imperiale Rappel.
