La maggior parte dei sitters di Leprince sembra essere stato più o meno come il pittore stesso — elegant parigini della classe media. L’identità del modello raffigurato qui e le circostanze che lo hanno portato nello studio dell’artista sono sconosciute, ma a partire dall’invasione dell’Egitto di Napoleone nel 1798, gli artisti francesi da Girodet a Gericault avevano rivissuto l’opportunità di dipingere figure in abito medio-orientale. L'interesse di Leprince in questo uomo pensieroso può essere derivato dalla guerra di indipendenza che è stata scomposta dai greci contro i turchi ottomani nel 1820.
