Van der Waal Ast apparteneva a un gruppo di pittori innovativi di vita morta nella città olandese di Zeeland, un importante centro per il commercio coloniale della Compagnia olandese delle Indie Orientali. Era particolarmente noto per il suo rendering di conchiglie, fiori e insetti, spesso disposti su uno scaffale illusionistico che sembra appellarsi quasi quanto al senso del tatto quanto alla vista. Gli insetti che ronzio e fluttuano intorno al frutto sovraccarico animano la superficie di questo dipinto ben conservato, guidando l'occhio a saltare attraverso la composizione asimmetrica.
