Uno dei temi che ha dato a Murillo il suo più successo è l'Immacolata Concezione, e questo è un bellissimo esempio del suo talento. L'immagine mostra la Vergine Maria, circondata da una flotta di angeli, che galleggiano sulle nuvole. Anche se molti dei suoi dipinti raffiguravano una forte versione di realtà, questo dipinto soars in immaginazione, la Vergine rivestita in luce, un alone che splende dalla parte superiore della sua testa. I molti angeli, che si aggirano intorno a lei in modo giocoso, la guardano come se fosse una preziosa reliquia da venerare e proteggere. Alcuni degli altri arrivano a toccarla in modo giocoso, come se fosse già loro madre.
