Ce tableau a été offert au roi du Portugal, Luís I, par Isabel II, la reine d'Espagne, probablement dans le cadre de sa visite au Portugal en 1865. La même reine avait donné une autre version de la même peinture au pape Pie IX, qui fut découvert plus tard pour être faux. La MNAA
