Las agudas habilidades de observación de Cavarozzi captan la intersección entre el arte y las ciencias naturales, fuente de interés en la academia establecida por su patrón, el noble romano Giovanni Battista Crescenzi. Un artista contemporáneo grabado allí copiando "frutos, animales y otras cosas extrañas". En otro lugar, Cavarozzi incorporó la vida en temas religiosos, pero aquí aisló su atención sobre frutas y aves familiares a los jardines romanos. Los espectadores eruditos habrían asociado su elección de sujeto con un episodio en Pliny the Elder’s Natural History, en el que el pintor griego Zeuxis representaba uvas tan convincentemente que los pájaros bajaban a peck en ellos.
