Le castrato Farinelli (1705-1782) est l'un des plus grands chanteurs d'opéra du XVIIIe siècle. Né Carlo Broschi, il s'installe à Naples en 1717 pour étudier le chant. Il fait ses débuts sur scène en 1720 et sa renommée se répand rapidement en Italie et en Europe. Ce portrait date de 1734, l'année où il est venu à Londres à l'invitation de l'Opéra de la noblesse et où il a obtenu un succès incroyable, gagnant plus de £5,000 en cette seule saison.
