Il castrato Farinelli (1705–1782) è stato uno dei più grandi cantanti lirici del XVIII secolo. Nato Carlo Broschi, si trasferisce a Napoli nel 1717 per studiare canto. Fece il suo debutto teatrale nel 1720 e la sua fama si diffuse rapidamente in Italia e in Europa. Questo ritratto risale al 1734, anno in cui venne a Londra su invito dell'Opera della Nobiltà e dove ottenne un incredibile successo, guadagnando oltre 5.000 sterline in questa stagione.
