La poesia di Ovid Metamorphoses (8 CE), composta 2000 anni fa, contiene una varietà di storie sul tema delle trasformazioni magiche (metamorphoses). Un episodio noto racconta come un cinghiale uccide Adonis, un giovane amato da Venere. Distraught, la dea trasforma gocce di sangue dalla sua ferita in fiori di anemoni scarlatti. Beniamino West riimmagina la scena come una tragedia di famiglia, con il figlio di Venere Cupido tristemente sentire per il polso nel collo di Adonis.
