Ovid’s Gedicht Metamorphoses (8 CE), komponiert vor 2000 Jahren, enthält eine Vielzahl von Geschichten über das Thema der magischen Transformationen (metamorphoses). Eine bekannte Episode erzählt, wie ein Wildschwein Adonis tötet, eine von Venus geliebte Jugend. Die Göttin verwandelt Bluttropfen aus seiner Wunde in gruselige Anemoneblüten. Benjamin West reimaginiert die Szene als Familientragödie, mit Venuss Sohn Cupid traurig Gefühl für den Puls in Adonis Hals.
