I disegni in libri di modelli quattrocenteschi funzionavano come una serie di esemplari che potevano essere riutilizzati da un artista. Disegnata su carta preparata in metallo, le immagini nei libri di modello erano altamente finite. A causa del loro uso frequente, sono sopravvissuti solo un piccolo numero di questi disegni, ma gli aspetti di questa pratica sono noti per aver persistito nei laboratori netherlandesi del XVI secolo. Una volta circa 1500 Gerard David ha copiato quattro teste del Ghent Altarpiece di Jan van Eyck. Nel suo disegno a punto metallico, basato sui papi e vescovi mostrati tra i Santi Martiri sulla pala d'altare, Davide pose accuratamente le teste in modo da non sovrapporsi, così l'artista poteva in seguito integrarle rapidamente in un dipinto.
