Nella scena superiore, San Nicola, Vescovo di Myra (270–343) – l'originale "San Nick" – è mostrato lanciare tre palline d'oro attraverso una finestra, fornendo la dote di tre fanciulle colpite dalla povertà. Nell'altro dipinto rianima tre giovani che erano stati prelevati da una locanda durante una carestia (una storia trattata da Benjamin Britten nella sua cantata del 1948, San Nicola). I pannelli formarono la base (predella) di una pala d'altare dipinta tra il 1433 e il 1435 per un monastero a Firenze. Il loro disegno era basato su una pala d'altare di Gentile da Fabriano del 1425.
