Una pergamena con caratteri cinesi incisi audacemente o attribuita a un monaco Zen prominente come Motsurin Jōtō sarebbe stata utilizzata per la visualizzazione in un'alcova durante una cerimonia di tè. Motsurin Jōtō, o Bokusai, era un discepolo stretto del famoso monaco Zen Ikkyū (1394-1481) di Daitokuji. A causa di questa stretta connessione, la calligrafia spazzolata di Motsurin assomiglia molto a quella del suo padrone.
