Degas fue regularmente a la ópera de París, no sólo como miembro del público, sino como visitante backstage y en el estudio de baile, donde presentó un amigo que tocaba en la orquesta. En ese momento, la ópera todavía estaba alojada en la rue Le Peletier y todavía no se había trasladado al edificio diseñado por Garnier que pronto lo reemplazaría.
