Boris Chatz (1867-1932) nacque nella città bielorussa di Varniai, all'interno dell'ex Impero russo. Il suo sviluppo come scultore ha seguito un lungo e complesso percorso attraverso Vilnius e Varsavia. Dal 1890 studiò a Parigi sotto il famoso scultore Mark Antokolsky. Chatz arrivò in Bulgaria nel 1895 e fondò la sua scuola di disegno privato. Nel 1896, insieme a Ivan Mrkvička e Anton Mitov, Boris Chatz divenne fondatore della State Drawing School e fu nominato primo professore di scultura. Ha creato ritratti ufficiali, composizioni realistiche e sculture decorative, utilizzando motivi dell'arte medievale bulgara. Fu lo scultore a sollevare per la prima volta la questione dell'identità nazionale nell'arte bulgara.
