George Washington, nominato comandante in capo dell'esercito continentale, prese il comando di una forza di ragtag di circa 17.000 uomini nel luglio 1775. Tenne insieme un esercito per i successivi otto e mezzo anni che persero più battaglie di quanto avesse vinto, ma terminò efficacemente la guerra con la sua vittoria a Yorktown nell'ottobre 1781. Missione compiuta, un eroe di Washington che avrebbe potuto essere re-dimesso la sua commissione militare prima del Congresso il 23 dicembre 1783, e si ritirò al Monte Vernon.
