Winterhalter begann ein offizielles Portrait von Empress Eugénie (Eugénie de Montijo, condesa de Teba, 1826–1920) kurz nach ihrer Heirat 1853 an Napoleon III, Kaiser von Frankreich, aber es wurde erst 1855 ausgestellt. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist dagegen relativ in Maß und Wirkung innig. Es zeigt die Kaiserin in einer zweiten Empire-Anpassung eines achtzehnten Jahrhunderts Kleid. Ihr Interesse am vorigen Jahrhundert, vor allem ihre Faszination mit Marie Antoinette, Königin von Frankreich von 1774 bis 1793, ist gut dokumentiert.
