I dipinti di Pissarro della metà degli anni 1870 sono in gran parte dedicati ai campi e alle strade vicino alla sua casa a Pontoise. Qui, si è rivolto a un soggetto più urbano, del tipo favorito da colleghi come Monet e Renoir: il giardino pubblico della città. La vista attraverso la pianura di Montmorency verso Parigi può essere scorciata a sinistra, oltre la guglia della chiesa di Notre-Dame di Pontoise. Ma piuttosto che sottolineare il panorama, Pissarro si concentrò sulle terrazze del parco, popolate da borghesi ben vestiti e dai loro figli. Ha esposto una scena simile, dipinto l'anno precedente (State Hermitage Museum, San Pietroburgo), alla prima mostra impressionista nel 1874.
