Pissarro alquila un gran apartamento en 204 rue de Rivoli en París para la primera mitad de 1899. Desde sus ventanas frente al Jardin des Tuileries, pintó seis vistas del jardín (incluyendo esta obra y otras dos en el Metropolitano), en las que los dobles empinados de la iglesia de Sainte-Clotilde perforan la vasta extensión del cielo. Atentivo a los cambios en la luz, la atmósfera y el clima, así como a las llegadas y marchas de los paseadores, en diferentes momentos del día y las estaciones del año, Pissarro fue capaz de extraer una variedad de imágenes de un solo sitio.
