Un gruppo di studi forestali è stato creato dal 1831 alla metà del 1830; Blechen probabilmente li ha eseguiti in plein air durante le escursioni che ha iniziato a fare con i suoi allievi nella campagna intorno a Berlino, nella foresta di Spandau, per esempio. Eseguiti in una varietà di tecniche che vanno dalla penna pura e dall'inchiostro all'acquerello e allo schizzo dell'olio, queste opere non sempre aderiscono strettamente alla natura; sono spesso drammaticamente o idilliaco-romanicamente idealizzate attraverso effetti di luce sorprendenti o attraverso l'aggiunta di tutti i modi di figure accessorie.
