Rungius was a German-born artist who was interested in creating art based on his experiences exploring the American West in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Rungius was both a painter and a sculptor. Theodore Roosevelt collected several pieces of art by Rungius including sculpture, sketches, and paintings.
