Questa chiesa, con la sua fine traccia gotica, è stata fondata nel 1369, deserta nel 1546, e poi abbracciata come un motivo da artisti romantici tedeschi. Carus visitò l'agosto 1820, facendo un disegno (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden) che serviva come studio per il dipinto. Rappresenta un panorama attraverso due finestre, uno su entrambi i lati del coro rovinato, verso un cielo mattutino pallido e una collina lontana. Nella sua starkness e opposizione di buio e luce, e con giovani alberi che si riferiscono al ciclo di vita, l'immagine invita sia la speranza che la meditazione.
