Carus était un peintre de premier plan du romantisme allemand, deuxième en importance seulement pour son ami proche Caspar David Friedrich. Il était un homme multitalent: un correspondant de Goethe, théoricien, écrivain sur l'art, professeur de médecine, médecin royal, et scientifique notable. Ses Neuf Lettres sur la peinture paysagère (1831) reflètent son attitude changeante envers la nature. Ayant d'abord embrassé un romantisme religieux-mystique, qui a été nourri par son amitié avec Friedrich, Carus a ensuite changé de cap, allant vers une plus grande objectivité et un naturalisme naissant. Sa spontanéité accrue face à la nature s'exprime de façon frappante dans le modeste motif d'An Overgraved Mineshaft, entrée d'une grotte rocheuse prise en charge par des mauvaises herbes et des buissons.
