Carus era un pintor líder del romanticismo alemán, segundo en importancia sólo para su amigo cercano Caspar David Friedrich. Era un hombre con múltiples talentos: corresponsal de Goethe, teórico, escritor en arte, profesor médico, médico real y científico notable. Sus nueve cartas ahora famosas sobre pintura al paisaje (1831) reflejan su actitud cambiante hacia la naturaleza. Al haber abrazado inicialmente un romanticismo religio-místico, uno que fue alimentado por su amistad con Friedrich, Carus luego cambió de rumbo, avanzando hacia una mayor objetividad y un naturalismo naciente. Su creciente espontaneidad frente a la naturaleza se expresa vivamente en el modesto motivo de An Overgrown Mineshaft, una entrada a una cueva de roca que ha sido tomada por malas hierbas y arbustos.
