À un moment de son histoire, ce portrait d'un inconnu a acquis la signature et la date qui apparaissent dans le bon contexte : « Goya 1780 ». L'approche inébranlable, pas tout à fait flatteuse, de la baby-sitter évoque le peintre espagnol Francisco Goya (1746–1828), mais cette manipulation du portrait n'est rien comme celle de Goya. Gaspare Traversi (vers 1722-1770) a été proposé comme son auteur, bien que cela ne soit pas universellement accepté.
