Il primo compositore a costruire la sua reputazione solo sulla base di opere strumentali, per raggiungere la fama attraverso l'industria editrice musicale, e per essere canonizzato e studiato a lungo dopo che lo stile del suo tempo è diventato outmoded, Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) è stato un violinista, influente insegnante e maestro di concerti. Fu anche amico dell'artista Carlo Maratta (1625–1713), che dipinse un ritratto di Corelli che si pensava fosse portato in Inghilterra alla fine del XVII secolo da Corelli
