Carte de visite of Lewis Douglass, the son of Frederick and Anna Douglass, was a 22-year old printer from Rochester, New York when on March 25, 1863 he joined the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Lewis Douglass was promoted to Sergeant Major on April 23, 1863 and was discharged on August 20, 1865. Following the Civil War, he lived in Washington, D.C.
